giving knitting a second try

A couple years ago I tried to teach myself to knit.

I got only far enough to be able to cast on and do the very basic knit stitch. And far enough to realize that knitting takes forever. And that it can be very tricky to keep all of your stitches.

All I could figure out was making a rectangle. Or, if I knitted a little longer, a square. Or, if I knitted a little longer, a bigger rectangle.

Then I learned to crochet. For me it was faster, easier, and I could make more shapes happen right away. It was a much better situation.

Now I think I am ready to give knitting another go. So I pulled out my needles and a bit of yarn. I found a website that shows how to cast on.

Then I relearned how to do the knit stitch. And then it was time to learn something new. I taught myself the purl stitch. That seemed like enough for one day. Woot.

magical gloves

I got these gloves from my wonderful mother-in-law for Christmas. Besides being super cute and nice and toasty they are incredibly functional.

The magical stitching on the pointer fingers and thumbs make it possible to keep warm while using my iPhone. Hurray! And I like to use my iPhone. Especially the camera. So fun.

And as a bonus, they have fantastic ruffles which make them extra adorable.

Let's hear it for ruffles!

Blake and I went to Big Bear Sunday through Tuesday. On our ride their we saw this beauty, complete with a "Caution: Radioactive Material" sticker. Lovely.

When I got to work around 7am on Wednesday morning I saw this right above the wine section. Great scott!

My Etsy anniversary is almost here!! I posted my first set of items on February 14th of 2011. It has been an absolutely lovely year. To celebrate the occasion I am hosting my very first giveaway!

One lucky winner will be allowed to select any one item from my Etsy shop to be there very own. Yes, you read correctly, anything and everything in my shop is up for grabs.

If the winner happens to be a blogger and/or Etsy seller, I will announce the winner along with a couple links to their sites to get them a little more traffic as a little bonus prize.

My favorite coffee shop is Viento y Agua. At Viento y Agua they use mason jars instead of cups. I love this idea.

I have started to re-use jars to house beverages in my home as well.

This jar is holding a tasty Medori Sour. Blake and I are currently addicted to Battlestar Galactica on Netflix. When the crew sits around playing cards in between battle sequences their drinks are about the same color as this. The shade of green reminds me of Slimer from Ghostbusters. Now I have a prop for when I feel like pretending I am on board Galactica. Now I just need some hexagonal playing cards.

Sometimes I try to make delicious coffee drinks at home. This one is just coffee ice cream with drip coffee over ice. Tasty and a lot nicer on the bank account than trips to Starbucks or other coffee shops. I will still visit these occasionally, of course, but drinks like this help me to cut down. Yum.



Iced tea is also quite tasty.

Or maybe I'll just make even more candle holders with pressed leaves and tissue paper. But probably not.

product knowledge

I work at Trader Joe's. One of my favorite phrases at work is "product knowledge". As an employee of the Joe's they want me to know about what we sell. This means I get to try a bunch of stuff at work on a regular basis. We have weekly tastings along with random new products just being opened and sampled on a whim. 

So wonderful. This magical concept doesn't just apply to food. For example, yesterday I spent the first half hour of my shift trying 6 different German wines. Oh, and a bowl of chocolate covered pretzels, some crackers and salami as well.

Not a bad gig if you can get it.

sidewalk vs. bikelane

Sidewalks are for walking. Bike lanes are for bikes. Why is it that this is so hard to understand?

Bike lanes are also safer for bikers and pedestrians alike. You are more likely to be hit by a car when you ride on the sidewalk than when you ride on the street going in the right direction. Just saying. So please let me walk on the sidewalk without having to jump out of the way.

blogiversary

I missed it. My one year anniversary of blogging. OOPS!

My first post was January 29th of last year.

It has been a very good year.

I have my Etsy shop up and running. I have created many new items since the first thirty or so that I had for my grand opening.

 I have very much enjoyed keeping a little record of my life as it happens on this site and absolutely love looking back at all the fun and growth  that I have experienced.

In my very first post I explained that the idea of selling things I made was first put into my head on a trip to Disneyland where I received many compliments on an owl hat I had made. Not only did people compliment the hat, they asked where they could get one.

Thank you, Princess Belle. Thanks for liking my hat. If a princess liked it why not see who else might be interested.

In related news (well, sorta related), my sister sent this image to my phone and it made me laugh a lot. I thought I should share.
